EMILY SPONG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The staff of Emily Spong Elementary School believes that all children can learn and we are committed to meeting the specific needs of each child. Our children willl be given a variety of opportunities to acquire new knowledge and skills through positivee, creative, and flexible instruction conducted within a comprehensiiive interdisciplinary learning environment conducive to their growth and maturation levels.

Emily Spong Elementary School serves approximately 250 students and is an integral component of the community, involving students, parents, school personnel and community members in the educational process. School-wide improvement strategies provide opportunitities for additional assistance to those students experiencing difficulties with competencies. Specific strategies will include parental and staff development, peer tutoring, Reading Recovery, science projects, teacher to teacher science mentoring programs , 4AGStart Program, tutorial programs for at-risk students, consistent experiences with multimedia technology , and a school-wide breakfast program..

Teachers will be rained in the use of strategies to encourage gender equity, strategies to help students with special needs, use of test information to improve instruction, and the integration and implementation of themes and content of the math, science, and technology to discuss and implement new practices. Partnerships with sccience-math-tech related organizations have been formed and opportunity for electronicnetworking have been created.

Parents are encouraged to asist in the educatin of their children through workshops, school/parent/students compacts, principal\parent/teacher socials, and the inclusion of parents in the decision-making groups at the school.

The school will determine that the student needs have been me through the use of mastery and criterion referenced tests, student portfolios, student progress reports, child observation records, anecdoctal records, Brigance testing and Reading Recovery records... The school will report to parents on individual assessment results using student profiles and explanatory letters, individual conferences Parent Conference Night and on other occasions as needed. Parent workshops on student assessment will be held quarterly.
