Personal Statement

My name is Carl Seward and I am sophomore mathematics major at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. My objective in life is to obtain a position that will utilize my skills and abilities in mathematics and computer technology to serve the welfare of secondary education students.

As I grow and mature through my matriculation at Elizabeth City State University, I have become more interested in technology. My thirst for technology started many years ago through a summer program designed to teach word processing applications, internet applications, and creative thinking skills through the use of technology. As a result of my diverse interest and abilities exercised in the program, I was able to obtain my first internship as technology trainer for the Network Resources and Training Site at Elizabeth City State University during the summer of 1999. This internship proved to be a success professionally and personally. I was charged with the development and implementation of a curriculum plan designed to teach young students computer skills. Consequently, as a result of my achievements in this program, I was asked to return in the newly created position of technology training specialist in the summer of 2000. This title presented the responsibility of training not only students, but also training two employees to assist me in the execution of my curriculum, along with overseeing two computer-training sites in the city of Portsmouth, Virginia. These two internships guided my improvement of organization, critical thinking, communication, and time management, along with my technology skills.

My internship experience has also afforded me the opportunity to do investigations in a more academic and scientific setting. During the summer 2001, I participated in the Undergraduate Institute in Physics - Research Experience for Undergraduates (UnIPhy - REU) program sponsored by the National Science Foundation and Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. The research, conducted with an endowed professor, pertained to the Form Factors and Distribution Amplitude for Positively Charged Pions, which won a presentation award at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Virginia, first place entry at the 2001 National Technical Association Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, and a presentation award at the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting in November 2001. This internship provided me the opportunity to work with theoretical and experimental physicists who are working on cutting edge research topics and allowed me to be exposed to their work conditions.

After graduating from Elizabeth City State University with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, I will attend graduate school to pursue a master's degree in mathematics. After completion of this degree, I would like to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics. With this breath of knowledge, my intentions are to help high schools in low income minority areas increase their resources. My ultimate career goal is to become a dean of a school of science at a historically black college or university, In this capacity, I would like to offer scholarships to students and help improve the college education of students.

My goals are high, but not unrealistic. I realize that with hard work, determination, and a spirit to guide me, I can accomplish any goal I set for myself.
