The Sonia Kovalevsky Day / Celebration of Women in Mathematics (CWM) was held on October 19, 2009 at Elizabeth City State University. This event is sponsored by the Association of Women in Mathematics (AWM), the National Security Agency, NASA, and the CIA.
Sonia Kovalevsky Day consists of a program of workshops, talks, and math competitions for middle/high school girls and their teachers. The purpose of the program is to encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics and to the level of mathematics competency in Northeastern North Carolina.
Sonia Kovalevskaya was a great mathematician and an advocate of women's rights in the 19th century. It was her struggle to obtain the best education available which began to open doors at universities to women.
