CWM 2009 :: "I Want to be Like Her" Essay Contest
The "I Want to be Like Her" essays are a chance for girls to read about the success stories of women in mathematics. They then write a short essay on why they could look up to and follow women who have oversome hardships and striven for success in their fields. The five essays below were chosen from all of the essays submitted as the winners in this years celebration.

Grade: 7th
School: Central Middle School
Denise Stephenson-Hawk, NOAA

I want to Denise Stephenson-Hawk because she is a wonderful woman. In her lifetime she has been through many struggles. She grew up poor and attended segregated schools all through the ninth grade. It is a very good thing that Denise Stephenson-Hawk remembers loving school. In 2000, for only one year, Dr. Stephenson-Hawk was Provost/Vice president for Academic Affairs of Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia. Denise Stephenson-Hawk is a very powerful woman and I would like to be her when I grow up.

Grade: 11th
School: Creswell High School
Denise Stephenson-Hawk, NOAA

I want to Denise Stephenson-Hawk because she is a strong dedicated woman. Denise never gave up even though she had a lot of challenges growing up. She grew up poor and attended segregated schools through the ninth grade, but Stephenson-Hawk never let that get her down. I'm very dedicated to doing my best at everything I do and never giving up despite the challenges I face throughout my life. Denise inspires me to stay strong no matter what. I hear her story and it influences me to never quit even when times get tough and thats why I want to be like Denise Stephenson-Hawk.
