Celebration of Women in Mathematics
A Celebration of Women in Mathematics was held on November 17, 2004 on the campus of Elizabeth City State University.
Girls and their teachers from Elizabeth City and the surrounding area attended a day of workshops and inspirational speakers. These speakers were from various universities and professions and spoke on the role of women in the field of mathematics today and how mathematics has made a difference in their lives.
The Celebration of Women in Mathematics Day is held in conjunction with Sonia Kovalevskaya Day. She was a great mathematician and an advocate of women's rights in the 19th century. It was her struggle to obtain the best education available which began to open doors at universities to women.
