I am currently a senior attending Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, NC. I am a Computer Science major with a minor in Industrial Technology. My personal and professional objective is to obtain the knowledge and skills at undergraduate and graduate levels that will enable a successful career in the fields of Computer Science and technology.

My love for computers and technology strongly influenced my decision in choosing a major and a minor. I chose computer science, because working with computers has been something that I have always been good at and enjoyed. They are becoming a lifeline for today’s society, and have always been an interest of mine. I acknowledged early that with a computers and technology advancing at the rate that it is, a career in the computer science and technology field would be a wise choice for me especially being an African American male. After obtaining my Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, I plan to attend graduate school to pursue a Master’s degree in also in Computer Science.

In the past few years of my college career I have been working to better prepare myself for graduate school and the working world. With participation in two intense summer internship programs at Elizabeth City State University, I have increased my skills in conducting research and using various software packages and platforms. With the aid of my internship opportunities and my curriculum classes I have gained skills in Windows, UNIX, HTML, Java, C++, Maple, ArcView, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Fireworks, Microsoft Word, Matlab, and Mathematica. As a participant in the 2005 ECSU-NAM (National Association of Mathematicians) Summer Institute for Computational Science and Scientific Visualization, my research team’s objective was to predict the most efficient fuel source to power homes in the United States in the years to come. We used the past, current, and future statistics of current energy forms like oil, coal, hydro (water), solar (sun) to form a linear programming equation using Maple, to predict the futures most efficient energy source.

Upon completing that internship, I was afforded the opportunity to take part in the Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean, Marine, and Space Science(URE OMSS) given by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) of Elizabeth City State University. As a member of the Marine Fisheries Team, our objective was to research and find a suitable habitat for Stripped Bass in the Albemarle Sound by using a bioenergetics model and studying other fish which have made their homes in the Albemarle Sound.

I greatly appreciate the opportunity that I received to take part in my summer internships for they were priceless. The experience that I received from the research and the knowledge that I gained from my mentors has helped to prepare me for the upcoming world of work and higher learning. I plan to continue doing research and learning new skills to add to my list of qualities and capabilities.
