Statement of Purpose
My name is Kaiem L. Frink a Computer Science Senior at Elizabeth City State University with a minor in Geographical Information Systems. As I enter my senior year as a undergraduate Computer Scientist in pursuit of my Bachelor & Science Degree in Computer and Information Syste ms. Following the advisement of Principal Investigator Dr. Linda B. Hayden and the exposure that has been granted to myself through the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER). Has not only introduced me to graduate school, but the fact I have the qualifications and characteristics that have allowed me to be a competitive applicant for Graduate School. Regardless of my stability and financial situations, I will always have my education.
During my undergraduate years I have been involved in both academic year and summer research projects related to remote sensing, global warming, photo imaging, stock assessment, scientific programming, water quality, information systems, systems vulnerability, and non profit organization development. These research projects have allowed me to submit, be accepted and present at scientific research synopsis through out the world. Attending these conferences has been a very important element in my academia venture, which granted me visual aids of what other undergraduate and graduate students were participating in at other institutions. Placing the proper contacts at these conferences was vital as well as inquiring in regards to graduate institutions and Ph.D. opportunities. While an undergraduate research student I have served on the Population Dynamics Team, Multimedia Team for two consecutive years, the Water Quality Team, and I was a participant in the Summer 2005 & 2006 Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean and Marine Science as a member of the Stock Assessment & Antarctic Temperature Mapping Teams.
In the summer of 2007 I interned at Carnegie Mellon University Information Systems in the Community internship where I served as the Assistant Project Manager of a team of eight undergraduates. As the Assistant Project Manager I identified internal and external system vulnerabilities and exploit the systems. In addition to assisting with quality assurance concerns, my sql and php coding errors. The importance of People, Process and Technology is the Information Systems slogan which I will follow when sharing my education with the world. I learned that technology hardly ever fails it is actually the people who use the wrong process that fails. The methodology of the project consisted of the project vision, overview statement, project feasibility, vision statement for proposed solution, use cases, scope, complexity, project sizing, and feasibility assessment. Another division of the project was the Team structure and capabilities. The project management division entailed time accounting, task analysis, project metrics, risk analysis, problem analysis, and client issues
During my undergraduate years at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) I have built a strong, supportive network with computer Scientists whose day is not complete unless they have had interaction with an Information System. Within these up and coming years I would like to obtain a fellowship to pursue my Master’s in Mathematics or Computer Science while still incorporating Geographic Information Systems. This will allow me the opportunity to seek advanced research in institutions where the research is encouraged and supported. My long-term goal within the next to five to ten years is to obtain a Ph.D. in the field of Computer and Information Systems or Mathematics.
I believe strongly in the notion of giving back. Much has been given to me and I desire to help others, especially young African-American men who need guidance and encouragement.
