“Be civil to all; sociable to many; familiar with few; friend to one; enemy to none.” by Benjamin Franklin My name is Willie James Gilchrist II and I am a junior Computer Science major at Elizabeth City State University located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Knowledge is something that I cherish a great deal because knowledge is the key to success. My goal to obtain an outstanding education so that I will be able to utilize my skills and abilities in the computer science field, and to prepare myself not only as a researcher, but also as a future graduate school student.
For the past three years I have been a student researcher in the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Nurturing program offered by the Math and Computer Science Department at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). I personally, being a Computer Science major, am truly eager to be apart of this program. This program continually exposes me to several things. This program has helped me learn more about my major and also gave me hands on experience with several aspects of my major in addition to my minor. The program has various research teams and I had the opportunity to be on the System Administration team in 2000 through 2001 school year. That year our team rebuild an Indigo 2 system from spare parts in order to study the methods an administrator use to secure the system initially from terror attacks. We also worked on knowing how the machines log on accounts and keep unauthorized users from accessing secure information. Furthermore we used the Indigo 2 to setting up user accounts, install new operating systems, software, and set up a small network. This research project help me to understand and appreciate the role of a network administrator and I got a chance to experience in greater aspect, some LINUX and UNIX commands.
During my first year in the ONR program, I was very fortunate to be chosen as an intern by Naval Research Laboratories (NRL) in Washington, D.C. While at NRL, I was assigned to the Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) division. For the duration of this intern I was able to conduct research in Augmented Reality. This internship allowed me to experience real life situations on a professional government level. By attending this internship it was very prominent, I have gained exposure to the area of Augmented Reality. Other skills include: LINUX OS, UNIX OS, Windows 95 OS, Windows 98 OS, Windows NT OS, Windows XP, Mac OS, HTML, C++, C, Easy CAD, Auto CAD 13, Auto CAD 14, Photometric, EMACS, Photoshop 5.1 + higher, Mathematical, Flash 4 and Dreamweaver. This only name a few of my skills that I have achieve.
It is my aspiration upon receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Aviation Minor, are to pursue my Master's Degree and afterward obtain a Doctorate Degree in Computer Science or a related field. I have a lot of knowledge and for this job I would apply my skills that I have learned, throughout my years of school. Though this I would have the abilities to work to my potential. I have the ability of been a hard working and an outstanding leader.
