1st Place ::
Elizabeth Clarke :: 12th Grade :: Camden County High School
Rosa Grymes :: Research Scientist :: Cell Culture Unit of the Space Station
Rosa Grymes is a prominent research scientist who specializes in biology. She is a strong role model and should be idolized by girls everywhere. Rosa deserves this because she has worked hard her entire life and overcome a lot of obstacles. I want to be like Rosa Grymes because I aspire to have a career like hers one day. We share a passion for biology and an interest in the complexity of life. Not only is Rosa a researcher, but she works closely with NASA. NASA is a wonderful program that only the best get to work with. I hope to one day work with them as well. Much like Rosa, I struggle with balancing a home life with school and work. For her it was because of her child, but for me, it was because my mother passed away. However, the premise is still the same and I admire Rosa for not letting it keep her from achieving success. I attend a small school and so did Rosa. She was limited in her high school education due to the school’s size and slime course offerings. I struggle with the same problem. I am often compared to students from other schools who have more opportunities, but Rosa has inspired me to push on. All in all, Rosa Grymes is a great woman, who has worked hard. She has inspired me to push on and try my best. As Rosa says, “If you can dream it, you can do it!” I will do it and achieve my goals with thanks to Rosa for inspiration. |

2nd Place :: Kassidy Watson-Perry :: 8th Grade :: Perquimans County Middle School
Debbie Schenberger :: Mechanical Engineer :: CAD Workstation
I feel that Debbie Schenberger is a bright and courageous young lady who never gives up. Her strongest subject was English when she was younger, just like me. Her most difficult was mathematics. She felt pressured, but still tried and eventually achieved… look where she is now. A strong and intelligent wife and mother of two. She now has confidence from her head to her toes. When in college, her friends switched to non-science majors after their first year and she was the only women left in her senior class. But even though most of her teachers and study partners were males, she gave it all she had and is now quoting that her gracious teachers were some of the people who motivated and encouraged her to proceed through her studies. I admire everything she’s done. My inspiration. |

3rd Place :: Elise Wilson :: 8th Grade :: Central Middle School
Rosemary Chang :: Computer Graphics Designer :: Silicon Graphics
I want to be like Rosemary Chang because I love computer graphics. I wish I could sit in front of a computer all day long and design intricate graphics. I find that geometric surfaces are easier to solve than most other problems and equations. I want to make a graphic simulation game that will be as famous as the Sims, Sims2 and Sims3. Computer representation of geometric surfaces is my favorite thing to study. I play or watch many graphic games to examine or study the graphic designs. I love working in my social studies book at school because they show pictures of graphic simulations of what we’ve been studying. That is why I want to be like Rosemary Chang. |

4th Place :: Eden Greene :: 12th Grade :: Camden County High School
Tahani R. Amer :: Aerospace Engineer :: NASA Langley Research Center
Tahani R. Amer moved to the US in 1983, around the age of 17 after being married. At that time she did not know a word of English, but that did not hinder her; she took her first calculus class and aced it. She went on to receive her two year associate degree and BS while raising two children. Tahani said “It was very difficult to go to school while raising a family…”, she succeeded in both. She is currently acquiring her doctorate degree and working at NASA. At NASA she is working on a system that will measure the thermal conductivity of a thin film. Tahani juggles her family, work, and excels as a leader in each area. Not only does she have four kids actively involved in sports and learning, but she is also largely involved in their and activities and work. Tahani exemplifies strong leadership, cares for her family, and achieved all the goals she set for herself. She is a strong and smart woman and that is why I want to be like her. |

5th Place :: Savannah Pearsall :: 8th Grade :: Camden County Middle School
Rosa Grymes :: Research Scientist :: Cell Culture Unit of the Space Station
Rosa Grymes is passionate about learning and loves to think about things that aren’t possible now, a reality. I want to be like her because we have the same ideas about the future. The only difference is that I want to change the way we go about caring for medical patients. There is a computer database called EPIC that my dad knows a lot about. He goes from place to place teaching people about it in the United States. I would like to carry on with EPIC around the world. I think Rosa Grymes would be happy because I want to change the future of patient care. |
