Statement

Hi, my name is Jasmin Rivers and I am a sophomore here at Elizabeth City State University. I am currently working towards receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.

Computers have always been an interesting field of study to me, but it was not until my senior year of high school that my passion for computers and technology grew profoundly. So with much enthusiasm and excitement I decided to major in the field of Computer Science. While I am a student at Elizabeth City State University I plan to take advantage of every opportunity that will come my way so that they may help me to further my education and experience in the Computer Science field.

In the fall of 2006, I was accepted into Dr. Hayden’s prominent Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research Scholarship Program. This has given me the opportunity to learn even more about the Computer Science field, while attending conferences on and off campus. During my freshman year, I have had the privileges of attending conferences such as: Minorities in Research Conference in Baltimore, MD, the 2nd Annual Future Tech Conference at Norfolk State University and Undergraduate Research Conference at the University of Kansas. These experiences have not only furthered my interest in the field but have also opened my eyes to the vast job opportunities that it has to offer.

While a part of the CERSER Program, I along with two other CERSER participants conducted a research project on the Undergraduate Research Experience 2006-2007 Multimedia team, under the mentorship of Mr. Jeff Wood. Being on this team I was introduced to working with software such as: Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Fireworks MX and Photoshop. Our teams’ mission was to create procedures for digitizing images not found on the CERSER website and inputting them into a digital library, along with documenting their contents using a set of metadata standards and practices. The experience in itself was new and innovating and it had unbeknownst to me prepared me for this summer’s internship.

This summer I am a participant of the Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean Marine Science/ GRID. Here my teammates and I along with our mentor Dr. Arvin Agah, will begin to create a video game for middle school children that will be turned over to graduate students at the University of Kansas. There they will modify the game so that it becomes a learning game for the children on ice sheets and the behaviors of penguins.
