Professional Statement

I was very skeptical at first about declaring computer science as my major. In fact, I had several majors before actually declaring it to be my official major. Some of these included: accounting, business administration, and fashion merchandising. My interest in computers and longing for stronger ties to the wonderful world of technology eventually led me to pursue my B.S. degree in Computer Science. I hope to one day pursue my master’s and eventually, my Ph.D. in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. Then eventually become a succesful African-American woman in Math, Computer, and Information Sciences.

Therefore, my top three career goals as of now are to graduate with honors, to maintain a 3.2 or higher grade point average, and to gain the necessary skills in mathematics and computer science in order to be proficient in my field of study. The courses that I have found thus far most intriguing are Computer Programming I, Elementary Statistics and Survey of Computer Science

To help me reach these goals, I applied for numerous internships to acquire hands on experience in my field of study. Furthermore, I received a position as a student in the 2007 Undergraduate Research Experience/GRID program at Elizabeth City State University. While here, I have acquired skills in Macromedia programs such as Fireworks and Dreamweaver. The team that I am on is called the TeraGrid Team. The members consist of, Illiana Thomas and Andrea Grumbles, both of Elizabeth City State, Tyrone Whitehurst of Norfolk State University, Camden Hearn and myself, both of Mississippi Valley State University. Thus far, we have installed Ubuntu on several computers along with individually installing the lamp software components.
