As a junior Biology major Chemistry minor at South Carolina State University, it is imperative that my academic track coincides with my goals. My goal is to help people in any way possible. I was interested in biology as far back as middle school while learning about earth science and the basic components of the body. This is when becoming a doctor became appealing to me. Since then, my mark has been made in every science class I attended. When the final graduation day appeared for high school, I wanted to put myself in a position to continue with science, so I entered the South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation at SCSU. This is a great scholarship program that introduces internships, the right classes to take, leadership skills, and resources that will last a lifetime. My peers describe me as a determined individual that can accomplish anything when I put my mind to it. I don’t have a problem with communicating with others and learned teamwork gets you farther faster at an early age.

I have experienced internships and research my past summer 2004 at the Medical University of South Carolina and recently at Elizabeth City State University. MUSC was a very informative internship involving health disparities and diabetes. Each student was rendered a mentor that attended MUSC and was given full access to their library and article database. The second part of the program was geared towards shadowing a doctor at the local hospital specific to each individual’s interest. At Elizabeth City State University I experienced different forms of research within my marine fisheries group. I learned the characteristics and bioenergetics models of the Albemarle Sound as well as interpreting and using the ArcGIS system to integrate into my research. Doing internships have never been a problem for me. I have worked since my junior year of high school doing various jobs as well as community service. Mentoring incoming freshmen and youth alike has always been fun and a learning experience. I also tutor in my spare time.

My drive gears me towards taking full advantage of my surrounding, and I intend to. This is why I either plan to go to medical school or graduate school. Either way, I want to continue my education to reach my full potential. If I attend graduate school, reaching for and obtaining my masters in biology would be my goal. Teaching may become a possibility. My real desire is to attend medical school, learn all I can, so I can start helping people; children in particular. There are two fields of interest I would like to work in; anesthesia and becoming a child practitioner. My plan has no room for error and if everything works out right I will be with a job I love and accomplish my goal of helping others in the process.
