Hello, my name is Antonio Deese and I am from Laurel Hill, North Carolina.  I am currently a rising sophomore, Biology major attending Saint Augustine's College.

Yearly checkups at the doctor’s office motivated me to become involved in the field.  I remember watching everything the doctor did, whether it was simply washing his or her hands or drawing blood from my arm.  Seeing doctors help others lured me into the study.  Being a hard working student and a highly motivated person, in terms of achieving things, is something that has always kept me striving.  I am currently striving to complete my four years of studies at St. Augustine’s College and graduate in the top percentage of my class.  This summer 2011 Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean, Marine, and Polar Science has been a great experience and an even better learning opportunity.   Gaining experience on how to work new technology such as, the Global Positioning System, wind meter, and the LaMotte TRACER Pocket-Tester are among the opportunities that have been afforded to me during this summer 2011 research program.

The past mentorship in the classroom and in this program has inspired me to give back and follow in the footsteps of the doctors that I once observed.  The footsteps will begin with the completion of my four years of undergrad at Saint Augustine’s College and graduate school in medicine.  From there, I will obtain my M.D. and become a pediatrician. Plans for more internship opportunities are already underway and I am hoping that they will broaden my horizon for a successful career.
