Professional Statement

Hello, I am Jessica L. Brownlow, a junior Mathematics and Biology major at Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU). Being that both my parents attended Mississippi Valley State University and I attended both elementary and high school in Itta Bena, MS where MVSU is housed, Mississippi Valley State University has always been home to me.  I always knew that MVSU was the school for me.

As a child, I always wanted to know more.   My inquisitiveness alongside my love of numbers fueled my decision to pursue degrees in Mathematics and Biology.  I have aspirations of obtaining a job, preferably in the medical field, that will allow me to help people while utilizing both of my degrees. I have participated in numerous programs in an effort to enhance my knowledge and skills.  Programs that I have attended include Valley Academy of Science and Technology, Mississippi Valley State University’s branch of the National Science Foundation Historically Black Colleges and Universities- Undergraduate Program Summer Program, Mississippi Valley State University’s Dual Enrollment Program, and Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean, Marine, and Polar Sciences. These programs allowed me to explore various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) area subjects while strengthening my abilities. Participating in these programs confirmed my belief that a career in a STEM discipline is the perfect career for me.

A job in the medical field will allow me to utilize my knowledge of certain sciences and be of assistance to citizens in need simultaneously. Upon graduation from Mississippi Valley State University, I have aspirations of attending Physical Therapy School to obtain a license to practice physical therapy.  For the short term, I would like to work in a hospital setting providing treatment for patients. Eventually, I hope to work as the Sports Medicine Physical Therapist for a professional athletic team.  Although this might require additional certification, I am more than willing to embrace the task.

Though I would like a job as a therapist, I am well aware of the fact that it is always good to have a back-up plan. I am a dual major—pursuing majors in both Biology and Mathematics. In the case that events do not proceed as planned, I would use either of my degrees and strive to become a college professor. This will allow me to conduct numerous research projects and work with aspiring students just like myself who hope to one day make a difference in the world with knowledge.
