Professional Statement

Growing up, my mother would always say that any goal that you set is achievable if you are willing do the work. During high school my father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which took his life in the fall of 2004 during my senior year in high school. That experience really ignited my desire to pursue a career in medicine. So I set two goals and one of those goals that I am currently working towards with great enthusiasm and excitement is obtaining my undergraduate degree in biology from Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina and the other is obtain medical doctorate. I feel that those two things are the most important in my educational odyssey.

I am currently participating in the Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean, Marine, and Polar Science at Elizabeth City State University for the summer of 2010. Our research topic is titled "Establishing a Baseline of Water Quality along the Coast of North CarolinaResponse to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill."

After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Saint Augustine's College my second goal is to attend John Hopkins to earn my medical degree which will enable me to open my own practice. Which I will use to give back to my community and family. Those are the two goals that I will obtain in the next seven years, education is a tool to achieve my goals. Learning gives me the challenge I need for self enrichment and to expand my awareness by helping me understand the world of science around me. It will also enhance my self-esteem and bestow pride in what I have accomplished. Someone told me once that ‘Knowledge is something that cannot be taken away from you.’
