Professional Statement

Greetings! My name is George Owusu Fordah. I am currently a senior at University of Ghana majoring in Oceanography and Fisheries. I believe life is how you make it; that is why I tend to put my best in everything I do. This principle of mine has soared me high as far as my current status.

The ocean as we know covers about 70% of the earth's surface and having an in-depth knowledge and understanding of what goes on, in, and around the ocean will go a long way to make life comfortable for the human race from generation to generation. This is because humans depend on the ocean for food, fuel and even for disposal of waste. It has always been my dream to go into a field concerning the ocean; watching the ocean with its diversity on television increased my passion to know more.

For the summer 2009, I had the chance of working under Mr. Emmanuel Boateng as a Quality Control Assistant Supervisor at Stripes Manufacturing and Trading Limited (Darling). The company deals with the manufacture of synthetic human hair. Though this is not related to my current field, I had the chance of performing tests on the chemicals used for the products. With the help of the Quality Control Director we were able to come up with new chemicals for new products. I was also charged with seeing to the maintenance of the machines and equipment and preparing daily product scheme for the company.

During the 2009/2010 academic year, my department offered me the opportunity to perform some water quality parameters analysis on the Vaugh dam in the Botanical Garden of my school. Various physicochemical parameters of the lake such as PH, turbidity and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) at the various sites of the lake were recorded and what contributed to the differences in values analyzed. This was done with the help of Dr. Adelina Mensah, a Senior Lecturer in the department.

This year, I am participating in a summer research program organized at Elizabeth City State University and University of Kansas. My mentor is Dr. Eric Akers and I am a member of Autonomous GPS Guided Watercraft team. After I receive my undergraduate degree I would like to pursue a Master's Degree and then obtain my PhD. I want to pursue a career in Marine Science by becoming a Marine Ecologist. It is most apparent that my training and experience in this research program will equip me towards my career. I know with such a great beginning the sky is the limit; for everything is possible if we put our minds to it.
