GEO REU Workshop 2014 NCAR UCAR ECSU CERSER NIA

The GEO REU Workshop 2014 sponsored by University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) provided REU leaders from more than sixty universities and organizations with an occasion to impart best practices and build community networks. Professionals and individuals new to the field of REU’s discussed goals, challenges, and strategies to running an REU.

Topics included:

  • Structuring an REU program & incorporating online tools into an REU
  • Adapting REUs for community college students
  • Creating inclusive REUs
  • Evaluation strategies
  • Using social media in an REU: what's the latest?
  • Planning professional development for students
  • Community issues: sharing applications, and more.

Dr. Linda Hayden, Director of the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), presented “Challenges and Solutions of Running an REU: Increasing Diversity”, an overview of experiences in managing research undergraduate programs (REU).
