Hello, My Name is William Kahan I am a Senior at Elizabeth City State University. Ever since I could remember I have loved the sciences, growing up in Garner, North Carolina nature was all around me and it intrigued my curiosity for life. I am a double major in Mathematics and Biology with a minor in Chemistry.
In the Fall of 2011 I started my research experience working on a project under Dr. Frontera-Suau titled Microbial diversity of an acidic, temperate lake; Lake Phelps, NC. We collected samples from Lake Phelps in NC and isolated single colonies of bacteria. We found over 27 different bacteria colonies using purified PCR DNA. Which portrayed typical micro diversity expected in a freshwater environment. I presented this project upon completion at a conference at Fayetteville State University as well as Elizabeth City State University Research Week.
In the summer of 2012 I started a second project with my mentor Dr. Abebe in which I worked on taxonomic identification of three populations of nematodes form Lake Phelps we found three new species of nematodes. I presented this work at research week at Elizabeth City State University.
The summer of 2014, and the preceding school year, I worked with the MatLab image processing systems. I intended to be working with the radar image processing at my internship with NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA-GSFC) in Maryland. I ended up working on a project concerning the containerized cloud computing systems at NASA-GSFC. In which I worked with Mr. Fred Duca on improving efficiency and performance of the cloud-computing network.
I am looking forward to completing my degree work here at ECSU by obtaining my Bachelor of Science Degrees in Mathematics and Biology with a concentration in chemistry (Pre-Med). I intend on entering a PhD/MD program to work toward my goal of entering the field of medicine with the intention of working in a hospital or research lab upon completion. |
