Hello, my names is James Headen and I am from Wilmington, North Carolina. Currently I am a senior at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) with a major in Mathematics and minor in Physics. The development of my interest with mathematics began as a young child. Each summer I would attend any nearby camp that focused on the sciences with a strong emphasis on mathematics. However it was not until I attended The Museum of Life and Science camp one summer that my eyes were opened to the creativity and expression of Mathematics.

I am currently progressing in my journey to obtaining a masters in applied mathematics. Here at ECSU I am involved in the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) program, directed by Dr. Linda Hayden. While participating in the program I have learned a number of skills which will sharpen my remote sensing craft in areas such as the Linux system, TeraScan, and Dreamweaver.

During the spring semester of 2014 I was a member of the research group called Goes Talent Team, with my mentor Dr. Malcom LeCompte. Our research was on processing images from the TeraScan system to a database. The use of the TeraScan system provided images from GOES, transferring them to config procs and bach ingest processing. Through the use of multiple images from both satellites, our team produced a single image.

I am committed to my journey and will obtain a B.S in Mathematics. I will go on to pursue a Master’s Degree in applied Mathematics. Afterwards I would love to use my remote sensing background and mathematics within the Defense Department.
