Elizabeth City State University was founded on March 3, 1891. The unversity specific purpose was to teach and train teachers of the colored race to teach in the common schools of North Carolina. ECSU first began operation on January 4, 1892, educating 23 students with a budget of $900. Today, Elizabeth City State University, a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina, offers baccalaureate programs in the arts and sciences, professional and pre-professional areas, as well as master's degrees in selected disciplines. |
