It is not easy to accomplish life goals without encouragement and self determination. As an African American woman I am determined to accomplish all of my goals and aspirations. I am a junior Mathematics major and Secondary Education minor at Elizabeth City State University located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
I have always had an interest in mathematics throughout high school.
I knew that it was the field that I wanted to pursue, so this helped
me to decide what I wanted to major in while in college. While I
am at ECSU I will continue to participate in many research projects
and internships that will benefit me in my career field as well
as making me a more educated and well rounded person. After receiving
my baccalaureate degree from Elizabeth City State University, I
will attend graduate school to pursue my masters in route to my
doctorate degree. With my degrees I would like to be an educator
at an institution of higher learning and or work in the National
Aeronautics Space Administration education department creating curriculums
for minority and home school students. In addition to being an instructor
at a college or university, operating my own liturgical dance school
is an endeavor of mine. This will help me to be a role model and
inspire younger and older people to get involved in the community
and to make something good out of their lives.
Some of my research experiences are as follows,
NASA LARSS Intern under Mrs. Dollie McCown, project “Inspiring
the Next Generation of NASA Engineers and Scientist through Educational
Outreach.” Academic year of 2006-2007 project: "West
Antarctic Ice Sheet Firn Temperature Record Continuity and Seasonal
Trends: Implications for Determining Emissivity Trends from SSM/I
Brightness Temperatures" under Dr. Malcolm LeCompte. Summer
of 2006, NASA SPHERE Intern under Dr. Raj Chaudary and Dr. Lin Chambers,
project “Creating a walking tour using google maps, of local
and remote GLOBE sites and their data on environmental phenomena
that are linked using Google Maps and GPS (Global Positioning System).”
Academic year of 2005-2006, project "Estimating Firn Emissivity,
from 1994 to 1998, at the Ski Hi Automatic Weather Station on the
West Antarctic Ice Sheet Using Passive Microwave Data” under
Dr. Malcolm LeCompte.
The goals and expectations that I have for myself are extremely
high, yet they are still attainable in my eyes. These goals include
graduating in May 2009 in the top percentage of my class, to get
accepted in a top institution for graduate studies, and to acquire
all the knowledge and skills necessary to be competitive in the
work force.
Lastly, I would like obtain funds in order to start a scholarship
fund that will benefit all minorities. This way they will gain more
assistance in furthering their education in the fields of their
choice.
