Professional Statement
Hello visitors and welcome! I am Illiana Thomas, a freshman majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Secondary Education at Elizabeth City State University. I graduated high school in Raleigh, North Carolina by way of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My mother relocated our family to the Wake County School District in hopes of providing me with a better high school education than what I would have been receiving. Throughout my four years of attendance at William G. Enloe High School, I was always a very attentive and involved student. In addition to maintain the honor roll all four years, I engaged in and held offices for activities such as Future Business Leaders of America, DECA (Association for Marketing Students), YMCA Black Achievers, YMCA Leaders Club, Men’s Basketball Statistician, and most importantly NC State University’s division of Math and Science Education Network (MSEN). Through MSEN, I served as vice-president and was given many opportunities to compete in math competitions which allowed me to exercise my greater knowledge of mathematics outside of the classroom.
Initially enrolled into UNC Greensboro for my freshman year, due to family issues I was no longer able to afford my tuition. It was a friend of the family, Ms. Barbaina Houston-Black of Elizabeth City State University that introduced me to a second chance. Through Dr. Linda Hayden I was given not only a second chance, but an enhanced opportunity. I always knew that I excelled in math but I never considered it as a major. I have now come to the realization that math is indeed the perfect route for me being that it gives me a wide range of career prospects. After my projected graduation in May 2010, my ultimate goal is to enter graduate school with a minimum of a 3.5 GPA and proceed onto attaining my Doctorate in Mathematics.
I believe, through my team research and annual summer internships, I will be well beyond prepared for what is in store for me after graduation. I am greatly appreciative of the opportunities that Dr. Hayden has offered me thus far and I will seize these chances and look forward to many more in my future.
