Personal Statement

I am currently enrolled, as a second term freshmen, at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) where I am working towards my bachelors degree, majoring in geology and plan to minor in art. I have done well in my classes thus far and expect to come out of this semester with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA). I have many interests other than geology such as, biology, ecology, anthropology, and literature to name a few. I have found that my true fascination is in the workings of the earth itself rather than with its inhabitance. Though, I am currently majoring in geology I would like to study some other fields of knowledge. I have always believed that to understand something you must first be familiar with all things that concern it. I wanted to join the office of naval research (ONR) team under one of my geology professors Dr. Lloyd Mitchell Ph.D. MS MPH. RS. to advance my studies and as preparation for a career as a field researcher. Because of my contact with the ONR program and with help from my student advisor I have been able to secure a position this summer with a research team that is based out of Pennsylvania State University . The program through Penn. State has been setup as a research experience for undergraduates (REU) and should offer a wealth of experience for the forwarding of my academic career during my tenure at ECSU I hope to continue working towards my masters, in geology or a related field. Under the supervision of Dr. Mitchell I am hoping to receive a position as assistant researcher for a grant dealing with the department of homeland security (DHS). This grant will primarily deal with the field of public health and sanitation, which is the field of expertise for Dr. Mitchell. After my schooling I would like to find a position as a field researcher or an analyst so that I may continue to research into the early histories of earth. Primarily I hope to attain a position that will allow for my continued education. “To stop learning is to stop living.”

Before coming to ECSU I attended a two year program through the ECPI College of technology. In this program, I studied electrical engineering and computer networking. Using Microsoft application prior to windows XP, we learned to configure computers for use by the school and to connect the computers into LAN based networks. We also learned to use various application programs, including spread sheet operations using Excel and Word. The majority of the program at ECPI was devoted to electrical design and repair of both analog and digital circuitry. . We learned how to design low level electronics and to trouble shoot circuit boards to the component level I also attended a final seminar on the repair and upkeep of medical equipment. My GPA throughout this program was 3.43. Upon completion of the program, I receive an AAS in biomedical Instrumentation and was certified by the Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) as a journeyman biomedical technician I was the only member of my graduating class to receive the journeyman’s Qualification and one of only four that received a certification.
