In the Classroom, I am
given the bare scientific facts that enables me to call myself a
Physics and Computer Science major. I learned about different laws and theories,
yet I
have little knowledge about the cutting-edge technology involved in their
applications.
Pursuing to graduate school will give me the opportunity to reconcile the
concepts I learn
in class and their applications in the real world.
I feel graduate school will be my path to a professional and scientific
career, so
being there will introduce me to the kind of environment I'll be working
in, for the best
part of my professional life.
I have always dreamt of working as a researcher. Pursuing my graduate
studies will not only
give me first hand experience in my intended research career, but will
also give me an
edge I need to gain acceptance when time comes for me to pursue a doctorate
degree.
Currently pursuing my BS in Computer Science and Physics at Elizabeth
City State University, I am
also an undergraduate researcher participating with the Physics Team in
the Office
of Naval Research (ONR) Program at Elizabeth City State University, under
the supervision of
Dr. Hayden . The aim of this program is to prepare students for graduate
school in the field
of research as well as gaining computer skills and traveling to conferences.
With " Research" as the key career word for me, I am doing every thing
possible within
my means to acquire as much experience before I finish my undergraduate
studies.
In this regard, I was at the Nano-Tribology laboratory at North Carolina
state University ( summer of 2002),
where I performed an experiment on wetting Quartz crystal with liquids,
and comparing theoretical and experimental results under the mentorship
of Dr. Jackie Krim.
With the help my mentor at the ONR lab at ECSU, Dr. Choudhury ,the physics
team investigated the
" Motion of Harmonic Oscillator Under the Influence of a Derivativ type
of Delta Forces"( Fall, 2000). The main objective of the research was
to find out and
prove the different type of forces that act on a spring, which is being
pulled with a mass attached to it.
My task was to solve for the homogeneous equations. Spring of 2001 was
yet another great academic semester for me, I was involved in another
project titled,
" Tunneling of Matter Waves through a Delta Function Type of Barrier ",
under the same mentor, Dr. Choudhury . We had to set up an equation of
motion of a mass using Newton's second law of motion and using Schordinger's
equation.
In the summer of 2001 , I was a participant in the Undergraduate Research
in Astrophysics and the title of my project was, " Clustering of Galaxies".
The goal was to use Mathematica software to create a model universe that
will allow for the layering of galaxies.
I have memberships in the National Technical Association, IEEE, American
Physical Society, Optical Society of America, and the Alpha Chi Honor
Society .
Realizing my limited background and inexperience, propels me to get
involved in as many research activities and internships I can , while
pursuing my Bachelor's degree.
I am a very responsible dedicated and industrious person. I believe that
these qualities, coupled with my enthusiasm for research will reap dividends
for me and the gradute program.
