Personal Statement

During my four years at Elizabeth City State University, I set up some goals in order to prepare myself for graduate school. I want to mastered computer programming, excel in my computer science courses so I will have a competitive GPA for graduate school, and experience at least three internships which will prepare me for graduate school and the workforce.

In order for me to achieve these goals, I will have to do the following: I will have to understand computer programming and comprehend the concepts of the program in order for me to do the program successfully. I've taken JAVA this past spring and it was very tough. But I got a general understanding of how to develop a program and how to develop a semi-program to make it work. My next goal is to decide what graduate school I should attend after I graduate from ECSU. I ant to attend graduate school offering a master's degree in Computer Engineering and eventually pursuing a PhD in either Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science. I need to look at fellowships and assistantships which will help pay for my expenses at graduate school. I am really strong in problem solving and mathematics. I can use these skills and apply it to the field of computer science.

I've done two internships while attending Elizabeth City State University. The first internships were the summer of 2001 with the AURORA Program at NASA-Langley in Hampton, VA. My task for the summer was to create a webpage for the CERES Inversion Working Group using HTML, C Shell Programming, and JavaScript. My mentor was Dr. Loeb. The second internship was this past summer with the SPGRE Program held at UNC-Chapel Hill. My research site was at North Carolina A&T State University. I work with 3 other researchers and three mentors. Our research title was called Forward Finite Difference Modeling of Seismic Wave Propagation. Our task for this project was to use Partial Differential Equations to get the wave equation, go out to the Environmental Studies Laboratory to do a Seismic Survey in order to collect the velocities and densities, and use the data and the wave equation to model the results using Seisimager3d software and Maple 7 Program. By setting goals for myself, I will be better prepared to be successful in graduate school.
