PERSONAL STATEMENT

Since the eighth grade, I've always known what I wanted to be. It might have been the way it was taught or the mystery behind all the unknowns, but whatever it was it had me hooked. I knew that Mathematics was the thing for me. Not only did I want the satisfaction of learning more about its different levels, but I also wanted to be able to teach others the exciting things being taught to me.

After graduating high school, I decided to enroll at a university that I knew would help me to develop my skills. Elizabeth City State University was that school and it is here where I am currently a junior Mathematics major with a Secondary Education minor. It is also at this university that I had the opportunity to be a part of the NASA/ONR program. This program not only helps me to learn new things in technology, but it gives me a chance to interact with other students and professionals from all over the nation. It is in the ONR program that I got my first true research experience.

My first project was to help develop an interactive CD-ROM. This CD-ROM project really got my attenction because the disk would help young students to learn about Mathematics using the environment. Under great metorship, I was able to learn about different paradigms in webpage development. I learned to use Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, and Macramedia Flash. At the completion of the project, my team and I had the opportunity to go to Tennessee State University to present a poster presentation on our research.

During the summer of 2002, I was fortunate enough to participate in an internship that was similar to my previous research experience. It was hydrology investigation involving nearby water sites. During this internship I got to see how different things in the enviroment affect our water and us as human beings. I also got to see how mathematics is involved in different investigations as far as numerical data is concerned.

I am currently on the Globe Team in the ONR program. I hope to learn even more things that will help me to enhance my mathematical skills and also my technical skills. I know if I keep working hard and never stop learning I will get to where I want to be and hopefully I can help others learn some of the skills that were afforded to me.
