My name is Deanna Mallard and I am a sophomore at Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU). During my scholastic tenure, mathematical problems and learning how the world is constantly changing involving the use of mathematics made me extremely curious and excited about the subject. As I grew older, learning that I was very proficient in mathematics moved me in the direction of selecting the subject as a collegiate major. It also helped formulate a desire in me to someday teach this subject to help others be able to appreciate the subject the way I do. As classes began, I thought it would be a great amount of difficulties than there were in high school since I was only a freshman, but I received lots of help from peers and developed very rigorous study habits. My advisor has told us since the day we arrived at MVSU that if we work hard for four years, we will be set for life.
Upon entering my second year of college, I received the great opportunity of attending my first internship at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in North Carolina. Here, I conducted research in the field of Mathematics on Enhancing Parent Involvement in NC-CCSS for K-2 Mathematics with my mentor Dr. Darnell Johnson. The main purpose of the research was to assist parents become more involved in students’ learning. In the same way as, helping them understand that parent involvement is helpful in academic success by developing training sessions for parents/guardians in grades K-2 from P.W. Moore Elementary School. In order to conduct this research, I had to create pre and post surveys and coordinate a workshop for the parents of first grade in order to help them understand the importance of being involved in their child’s learning.
After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Mathematics Education, I plan to further my education by obtaining my Master’s Degree in Education. With my education, I plan to educate middle school children at the highest possible level. I have come to realize that I wanted to be an educator because I want to give back to others the same opportunity that has allowed me to get this far, an education. |
