My name is Shanecia K. Beckworth, a professional student receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science at Mississippi Valley State University. Since entering into grade school, I have always been interested in my schoolwork and making the best grades. My mother has always been my motivation to do well in school because of the many hardships she faced raising my siblings and I. When she passed in the year 2008, it made me even more driven to make it. Also as a young child, I have always had a fascination with computers. As I was in the termination of my high school years, one of my teachers informed me about Computer Science and what a great field it is to go in.

During my first semester of my freshman year of college, one of my professors mentored me and helped me reach a paramount. She did not let up until I finally realized that there are some things I have to do differently than I did in high school. She keeps all of her students up to par with all of the best scholarships and internships available to us. For that I thank her because there are so many things and opportunities out there.

I have a curriculum sheet to keep me on track with all of the classes required for the next four years. This is so I will not be behind for graduation. Currently, I am attending the Center of Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CRESIS) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) internship program. This program helps prepare me for the professional workforce. The Archaeology team is the team I was placed on. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Survey of Edenton Green for Early Structural Remains is the name of the research the team will complete. The GPR survey will be done on the Edenton Green in Edenton, NC. Recent excavation by a utility company on Edenton Green unearthed the presence of a layer of thin red bricks, presumably the flooring of fireplace apron for a former structure at the site. Local historians and archaeologist chose this site for a GPR survey. It was requested that the assistance of Elizabeth City State University's Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research to determine the size and form of any artifacts or structural remains located below the Green's surface that might be correlated with early records or histories of the town.

There will be several things I learn throughout the completion of the research. First, will be how to use the GPR. The attachment and detachment of the device will be taught to the team and the software system also. There are other software system the team will learn to use such as EnviClassic and RADAN 6.6. EnviClassic will be used to do a geo-registration with modern aerial Digital Ortho- Quarter Quad (DOQQ) imagery and high spatial resolution satellite imagery, if available, to establish, with high accuracy, the location of such structural remnants that may appear in old maps. RADAN 6.6 will be used for data processing and 3D imaging processing.

Throughout this program i will receive certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first Aid. I will get to experience some activities such as canoeing, boating, working with a GPS, and learning to swim. The program teaches students how to use different software applications on the computer such as Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop. A professional webpage and team webpage will be done throughout the course of the program also.

After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, I plan to further my education by pursuing my Master’s Degree in Computer Science. My goal is to work for a major corporation in the Computer Science field.
