Research Proposal The purpose of this research is to find out the impact the mathematics redesign lab has on the achievement and success of students in College Algebra at Mississippi Valley State University. The mathematics redesign lab uses software that provides videos, homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. Instructor-led workshops are available for additional assistance on difficult topics. With the guidance of a mentor and/or instructor students can progress through this course at their own pace, but they must always follow the curriculum given by the instructor. In the mathematics redesign lab the students are expected to attend class, watch videos, take notes, and complete the homework, quizzes, and exams. Students have to attend their regular course for the additional study which is led by the instructor. The students are also expected to spend some time outside of class doing related assignments for each credit hour in class. The mathematics redesign lab has been at Mississippi Valley State University for three and a half years. During my research, I will be looking for a relationship that exists between two or more variables. The variables that I will be looking at during my research are attempts, instruct, practice, and certify. Attempts are an act of trying to achieve something, typically one that is unsuccessful or not certain to succeed. Instructs deal with the information given to the students by the software, where they can take notes, and retrieve formulas and needed information to complete the lesson. When in instruct mode the students will be able to look at the videos on the software, for a better understanding of the lesson. After taking notes and understand the instruct mode, the students are then able to continue on into the practice mode, where they will be given practice problems based on the information give during the instruction section of the lesson. After the students have completed the practice section of the lesson, they will then be asked do they want to continue practicing or do they wish to continue on to certify mode. In certify mode the students will have to master the lesson for completion. In order to master a lesson the students have a certain amount of problems he/she can miss before they are asked to return to practice. Based on these four components, I will be looking at the time duration during each one of these levels to see if there is a correlation between the student's achievement and the time spent during each lesson. While looking at these components, I am faced with a problem, which is to find out if the inclusion of the mathematics redesign lab is helpful, or to see the impact that the mathematics redesign lab has on the students and their achievement. Based on the information that I will be collecting, I will be using the four components (attempts, instruct, practice, and certify) as the independent variables and the final assessment given to the students at the end of the course as the dependent variable. After the collection of this information, there will be analysis drawn to help give a better understanding and importance of this information, and to see the role that the mathematics redesign lab plays in the success and the achievements of the students.
