Magnet Adventures in Mathematics and Science is a cooperative partnership between I.C. Norcom High School Mathematics, Science and Technology Magnet Program and Norfolk State University School of Health Professions and Natural Sciences .

MAMS is designed to:

  1. prepare students to perform at a higher level in Advanced Placement classes.

  2. to provide students an opportunity to interact with college students who are successful in achieving mathematics and science-related career goals.

  3. to increase standardized test scores in mathematics and science.

  4. to supplement the equipment currently available in science classroom laboratories

  5. to provide magnet students in grades 9-12 additional reinforcement and extensions in the areas of mathematics and science in a college setting.

Students involved in the biology, chemistry, and physics laboratories meet on Saturday, monthly, for 3 hours. All labs reinforce classroom curricula and are conducted on campus, by NSU professors and instructors. Pre- and Post sessions are conducted in science classes, at I.C. Norcom High School, by classroom teachers. Especially important, is the additional time and concentration given to students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes. Students involved in the Mathematics Laboratory meet on Saturday, weekly for 3 hours at I.C. Norcom High School. Special sessions are conducted at NSU for testing, placement, and computer interaction. In addition to promoting student interest and academic achievement, MAMS strives to bridge the gap between college idealism and secondary realism. The instructors confer regularly and are able to communicate the weaknesses and strengths found on each academic level. This increased awareness enhances the learning of the students and has an impact on curriculum planning and revision.
