Statement of Purpose

The characteristics that I seeks in a graduate school is their Academic and research programs that are offered. The statistics of the students who obtain their Master’s from the graduate program as well as students who continue on to complete their Ph.D underneath the age of 28. Being a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and relocating to Elizabeth City, North Carolina to obtain my Bachelor of Science, I’m willing to relocate for his Master’s. I’m interested in who my classmates are and the undergraduate universities they attended. In addition to class size, average GRE scores for the past five years, and available Funding that I may qualify for with the GPA I have earned. This will hopefully give me assistance with financial support for now and in graduate school.

During my undergraduate years at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) I intends to continue building a strong, supportive network in order to gain internships, experience, and contacts. While on campus, I has been involved in the Global Leadership Academy, the Pre-Alumni Association in which I was president, in Newpenndel, an academic support group for which I was a founder, The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) where I was treasure, Office of Naval Research (ONR), and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from which I received scholarships from.

At ECSU, I had three internships and been involved in five academic year research projects, which have allowed me the opportunity to travel as well as develop my oral presentation skills. In addition to participated in an Oral and poster presentations at The National Technical Association’s (NTA) 77th National Conference and Technical Career Opportunity Fair held in Houston, Texas. The Modeling Diversity in Computing and Engineering (ADMI) the Symposium on Computing at Minority Institutions held in Rincon, Puerto Rico was an opportunity for me to display my research project and that conducting research can send me all over the word to study along with some of the world best researchers. The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Symposium was held at The University of New Hampshire where I presented in the Poster Presentation presenting Macromedia Cold Fusion as an Web Application Server. Their GIS laboratory had all types of capabilities using GIS software.

Attending these conferences has been a very important element in my education this allows me to see what other students are participating in at other institutions. I have completed two internships, one prior to ECSU. The summer of 2004 with Department of Commerce in Philadelphia for Mayor “John Street” at the State Municipal Service Building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where I interned as an Information Technologist.

During the 2004-2005 freshmen academic year the ONR Multimedia Team mentor was Mr. Jeffery Wood Web page Developer. The research project was titled “Macromedia ColdFusion as a Web Application Server”. This project involved an intense amount of coding and decoding of ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML), Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), and Active Server Pages (ASP). The software packages had a intricate learning curve. Receiving original images from the TeraScan machine and storing the original image, while creating a duplicate of the original image, resizing the duplicated image and then uploading the duplicated image onto the server. Once the images are onto the server a CFML extension is required in order for the client user to access the duplicated images now on the Serve. While making this entire process an automatic an processes so that the most recent images would be an automatic upload.
The summer of 2005 was with the Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean and Marine Science program at Elizabeth City State University where the research project was titled “Stock Assessment”. The team mentor was Dr. Michael Prager and was held at the NOAA Beaufort Laboratories in Beaufort, North Carolina. I worked with the Population Dynamic Team where scientific programming was conducted with several programming languages such as R, S, and C++. These languages had to link, run, compile and then output into a three column graph where the A and C column where independent and column B would display a mirror image of both columns.

During the 2005-2006 academic year the ONR Multimedia Team project was titled “Automated Approach of Cataloguing TeraScan Images Utilizing Active Server Pages”. I was a participant in the 2006 Undergraduate Research Experience in Ocean and Marine Science as a member of the Antarctic Temperature Mapping team. The team mentor was Dr. Malcolm LeCompte in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at ECSU. These internships and research projects allowed me the opportunity to seek advanced knowledge in locations where research is encouraged and supported.

My short-term goals within the next two years are to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information Science and a Minor Geographic Information Systems with no financial hardships. Within these up and coming years I would like to obtain a fellowship to pursue my Master’s in Mathematics & Computer Science while still incorporating GIS. My long-term goal within the next to five to ten years is to obtain a Ph. D. in the field of Computer and Information Systems or Mathematics.

My Intentions are to share my education with others that I interact with. My point of view on life is that you are only as smart as those you interact with! Education is trade that must always be sharpened and challenged. Since education is a trade, it is important that this trade is used and passed on to the younger generations.
