On July 10, 2012, Ms. Jamika Baltrop provided a graphing calculator training for a group of students ranging from middle school to high school level at Samuel Chapel Baptist Church located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The training provided the students with the basic tools and functions to operate the TI-83 graphing calculator to perform basic calculations, functions, and equations at the middle and high school level of mathematics. As part of the training the students performed an activity in which each student had to perform a taste test of unlabeled brands of cola and lemon-lime sodas and their votes were tallied according to which one they thought was the best “tasting” out of each category. Once the values were collected, using the TI-83 graphing calculator each student had to plot the data to display the overall average. |

YouthBuild is a program within Elizabeth City’s River City Community Development Corporation located in Elizabeth City, NC. The program is geared towards high-school drop-outs between the ages of 16-24 prepping them with the necessary skills to succeed in the career world as well as providing them with leadership development and job training skills. The YouthBuild program headed by program manager, Angie Wills, also provides participants with academic training to prepare them for the General Education Development (GED) test and the general requirements for entry into college. And one of those preparatory trainings is the Texas Instruments TI-83 graphing calculator training held by Ms. Jamika Baltrop. The training provided the participants with the basic tools and functions to operate TI-83 graphing calculator to perform basic calculations, functions, and equations. To close out the training each participant was required to do a short activity in which they had to plot the values of two sorted list (x and y) and find the linear regression of the scatter plot. The graphing calculator training resulted in the students having a better understanding of how to operate a graphing calculator and better prepared for the GED. |
