SC10Supercomputing 10 (SC10) sponsored by the IEEE and ACM societies took place in New Orleans, Louisiana from November 13 - 19 2010. The purpose of the conference was to bring together experts in the high performance computing fields specializing in research, networking, storage and analysis. Dr. Linda Hayden, Mr. Je'aime Powell, and Ms. JerNettie Burney attended the conference as participants in the Education Program and the Student Volunteers programs.

The Education Program was designed to introduce high performance computing and computational tools, resources and methods to undergraduate faculty and pre-college educators. The program consisted of a group tutorials and seminars to allow the participants to interact with specialists to incorporate principles learned into their classroom when returning to their parent institution. While in the program Mr. Powell also participated in the program exhibit with the inclusion of his poster entitled "Multi-Channel RADAR Depth Sounder (MCRDS) Signal Processing: A distributed Computing Approach." Mr. Powell also aided in touring two local high school groups through the exhibition floor for demonstrations from exhibitors such as the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, Indiana University, Dell and other groups represented at the conference.

SC10

The Student Volunteer program encouraged undergraduate and graduate students to help the SC10 with administrative tasks relating to the conference. In exchange the student's registration and limited support was given to the students. Ms. Burney enjoyed speaking to the over 300 exhibitors when not monitoring conference sessions or aiding with survey reporting. Ms. Burney seemed most impressed with the Student Cluster Challenge at the conference in which teams of undergraduate students competed in the completion of HPC computations with limited power resources.

The SC10 conference was a wonderful wealth of information and experiences which will not soon be forgotten by the ECSU delegates. They both look forward to incorporating the knowledge gained at the conference into the use of the ECSU Umfort Cluster.
