Representatives from Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) attended the 13th Gateway Computing Environments Conference sponsored by the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI). The conference took place at the University of Texas at Austin, Texas. This conference featured hands-on tutorials, demos, keynotes, presentations, panels, posters, and plenty of opportunities to connect with colleagues.

Dr. Linda Hayden, Associate Director and lead on the Workforce Development team attended the conference with ECSU student Thomas Johnson III who served with the student volunteers at the conference.

Thomas was an accepted participant in the Computing4Change competition of the Supercomputing Conference. This is a competition for students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds who want to work collaboratively to:

  • Learn to apply data analysis and computational thinking to a social challenge
  • Experience the latest tools and techniques for exploring data through visualization
  • Expand skills in team-based problem solving
  • Learn how to communicate ideas more effectively to the general public
