IEEE-GRSS Student Chapter - Distingsuished Lecture Series
The meeting was opened by Dr. Linda B. Hayden. She welcomed guests, gave brief accounts on previous research activities conducted by the IEEE-GRSS student chapter at ECSU and acknowledged ECSU faculty members that were present. Malcolm Dcosta, Assistant Professor, Mathematics & Computer Science at ECSU welcomed and introduced guest speaker Mr. Joseph Ausby. Mr. Ausby, an ECSU alum, presented information on the topic “Positively impact your community: Choose a GIS career within Government.” Mr. Ausby introduced and explained how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used in the city. There are GIS professionals that gather and control data in order to perform high level analyses. The city of Wilson maintains over 300 different GIS labels, ranging from addresses to parcels to flood and bill collection data. Mr. Ausby stressed the importance of students taking advantage of all opportunities afforded to them and keeping in mind the perspective of diversity that is necessary in government sectors.

Dr. Kenneth Jones, Professor and Chair for the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at ESCU presented Mr. Ausby with a certificate expressing the university’s appreciation for his presentation. Dr. Hayden followed up with ECSU’s accomplishment of discovering a bay in West Antarctica, which is named in their honor. Dr. Johnny Houston, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and vice president of the chapter, gave remarks on this presentation and reiterated the fact of students learning how to learn new things, life is about building on what you learn at the university to expand it to where you want to go, and most importantly, anything you learn can never be taken from you. Dr. Hayden closed out the program with encouraging words.
