On Saturday February 13, 2016, students and guests of Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, and Samuels Chapel Church boarded a bus to visit the Virginia Air and Space Center’s Black History Month Celebration in Hampton, Virginia. Over 100 representatives of the Hampton Healthy Family Project and the City of Hampton School Age Program participated in this event.
Visitors were able to visit exhibits such as the National Air and Space Association (NASA) to view the types of equipment astronauts wear and what foods they eat. Along with the exhibits, visitors were also able to interact with the exhibits, which included natural sciences on the first floor and aviation on the second floor.
Visitors to the center were able to meet representatives from the Tidewater Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen. This organization is dedicated to the preservation of the history of African American Veterans whose service during World War II demonstrated to America that the criteria for responsible citizenship are character and achievement rather than ethnic origin.
The ECSU group viewed “Journey to Space 3D” in the IMAX theatre. This feature film explored the continuing projects of NASA and the space community to explore space.
