The students in Mrs. Wanda Hathaway’s WIN time class have created and developed robotic models by using the LEGO Mindstorms Education robotic kits. As an A-Plus certified school, Elizabeth City Middle School has introduced a STEAM lab where the students explore analytical and kinesthetic activities with a connection to the arts in learning topics of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Dr. Ervin Howard has assisted the students in programming their robotic models to perform certain commands. For instance, such commands include using the robotic models’ sensors to detect objects, detect light emissions, emit sounds, and display images from their LCD panels. Dr. Ervin Howard is serving as a Research Associate from the CERSER program at Elizabeth City State University in collaborating with local middle grade schools in sharing STEM-related activities and ideas.
