IEEE-GRSS Spring Distinguished Lecture Series
Thursday 13 November, 2014 5:30 pm
Room 229, Dixon-Patterson Hall, ECSU
Mr. Michael Osterhouse
UNIX System Administrator Antarctic Research
Mr. Michael Osterhouse presented an overview of Antarctic research as part of the IEEE-GRSS Distinguished Lecture Series. Mr. Osterhouse spent time in Antarctica while serving in the US Navy as a meteorologist and later as a civilian in the same position. His experience with weather systems, including the TeraScan system currently in use at Elizabeth City State University, coupled with his UNIX programming experience has made him a valuable resource to the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) program.
During the IEEE-GRSS meeting, three students presented their recent acceptance to upcoming conferences. Khaliq Satchell’s research from the summer of 2014 at Indiana University, “PlotViz: The Next Visualization Tool in Bioinformatics,” was accepted at the Emerging Researchers National Conference in Washington D.C. on February 19-21, 2015 (http://www.emerging-researchers.org/). Jefferson Ridgeway’s Spring 2014 research at ECSU, “Update of the CERSER TeraScan Cataloguing System TeraScan Image Processing Scripts,” was accepted at the North Carolina GIS 2015 Conference in Raleigh, NC on February 25-27, 2015 (http://ncgisconference.com/). Derek Wilkins presented information on his upcoming attendance at the 2015 SuperComputing Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana (http://sc14.supercomputing.org/). Derek will be attending the conference as part of the Broader Engagement (BE) Program which has the goal of increasing the participation of individuals who have been traditionally under-represented in High Performance Computing. |
