The Math Sprint competition took place at Park View Elementary School located in Portsmouth, Virginia on April 29th at 1:30pm.  Ms. Jacky Rhodes and her 6th grade class were selected for this year’s math sprint.  The objective of the math sprint was to create a fun, interactive way for students to be tested on their knowledge of mathematics as well as what material needs to be reviewed and have fun while doing so!  The math sprint competition also aided in developing team participation, communication skills, and critical thinking when students are working with others in a group or team setting.

Ms. Rhodes class was split into six groups (teams) with six students in each group.  Each team of students came up with their own unique name for their group:

1 MS 1 MS
1 MS 1 MS
1 MS 1 MS

All teams were given one hour to complete and answer the same set of 20 questions. Each team had a “team captain” or “runner” which was responsible for running up to the teachers’ table submitting their question and answers, and running back to their team with the next question, repeating this process and so on and so on.  The teams were scored on all the questions that were answered correctly; no point or scoring were given for incorrect answers. Each student on each winning team received a trophy and a “Math Demand It. Math is Power” backpack.  All other students received a medal for recognition of their hard work and effort.

Thanks to the Eastern Area STEM Committee, The Portsmouth Chapter of Links, Inc. and The Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) for supporting this event.
