From September 27 -29, 2011, Dr. Linda Hayden, Director of the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER) at Elizabeth City State University attended the 5th Annual Minority Serving Institutions Technical Assistance and Capacity Conference in Dallas, Texas.  The Conference’s theme for the year was Educate Innovate and Cultivate.  The conference presented an opportunity to showcase new strategies and methods for partnering with federal agencies.  Workshops offered information about acquisition, compliance and regulatory requirements, and information technology.  Additionally the agenda featured sessions on technology transfer, education partnerships, mentor protégé, intellectual property, partnerships and other topics of interest to MSI faculty and administrators.

The conference addressed the following:

Outreach and Customer Relations 
Federal agencies informed and educated minority communities about their missions and additionally worked with MSI communities to create innovative, affective, and mutually beneficial partnerships.

Technical Assistance and Capacity Building
Agencies assisted MSI’s applying for Federal funding, entering into partnership agreements, or referring qualified student and graduate for employment

Economic and Community Development
Agencies fostered economic and community development through business consulting services, entrepreneurship support, and commercial and residential development.  Agencies also protected businesses’ competiveness in the global marketplace and increase success to telecommunications, particularly broadband infrastructure.

Collaborative Research and Joint Program Implementation
Collaboration was the touchstone of scientific and technological advancement.  Scientists, students, faculty, professionals, and participating institutions advanced their goals through Federal agencies’ MSI programs.

Recruitment
Agencies recruited and hired through a variety of resources such as career fairs, trade magazines, advertisements, onsite interviews, internship programs, student employments programs, and informational sessions for student organizations.
