Research Week 2009
Research & Graduate School Fair :: Presiding - Dr. Cynthia Warrick

I really enjoyed all the events I attended during Research Week. If I had the time, I would have attended all the events but time permitted me to attend a few. The first event that I went to was the Major African American Contributors in Mathematics, Computer Science and Biology seminar. The speakers were Kaiem Frink and Cynthia Warrick.

Kaiem Frink spoke on the major contributors here in Elizabeth City State University which included Dr. Linda B. Hayden. Cynthia Warrick gave some trivia questions which stumped me because I never knew that much about contributors in biology so I learned a lot from that seminar.

The second event that I went to was the Watershed Watch presentation and reception. It had a good turnout and Dr. Stephen R. Hale had a lot of good things to say about watershed watch and all that it stands for. Basically the watershed watch internship is a two week summer research institute where we receive four credit hours, academic year seminars and faculty mentoring during the research project. The benefits are $250, college credit, and tuition paid while you stay in UNH dorms, conferences and travel and opening your mind to new people, places and opportunities to excel.

The topics that the program deals with are geospatial technologies, aquatic science, social science, terrestrial science and mathematics. I had the opportunity to experience the program during the summer of 2008. It was a great experience and a great environment that I hold no regrets while staying up there. The first week we toured the different watersheds and the second week we went to Mt. Moosilauke and that was one experience I could have lived without! I’m glad I experienced it though, because it’s something that I don’t I would have done if I wasn’t in the program.

Friday was the last day of Research Week and it was the student and faculty poster session. I was fortunate enough to be chosen to present my summer internship project to the various students, teachers and judges. My project was entitled: A Water Quality Comparison of two New Hampshire Watersheds-Merrimack and Pascataqua. My team collected water from the two watersheds and compared its bacteria count, amount of oxygen, pH (acidic vs. basic), conductivity (amount of electricity passing through the water) and turbidity (how clear the water is).

Overall, I was happy with how the week turned out, and a lot of people came out and supported the cause. Hopefully, I will be able to present again because it was a real thrill to explain to people my accomplishments and I was really proud of myself.
