15 Jeffrey Guzman :: Saint Augustine’s University :: Professional Statement
My name is Jeffrey Guzman. I am attending Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina pursuing a Computer Information Science degree. I started working on computers when my family bought one for us to use. I was eight years old when I first got the chance to install all the components for our desktop to start running. Getting that hands-on experience and seeing how everything worked on the computer is what got my attention to continue to learn more. As I got older, I became interested in installing routers and learning how it worked and making sure it was not open for everyone else to use. What drew me and got my attention into working with computers was trying my best to fix the problems that occurred and making sure it was running properly. Knowing that you have accomplished something without asking for someone’s help and doing it on your own is a great feeling and it is what pushes me to keep trying until I reach a point where I do not know what else to do to fix the problem.

I attended Wake Tech Community College for two years before transferring to Saint Augustine’s University. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Science. This summer I am involved in an internship at Elizabeth City State University where I will be working with new programming languages such as Python, Git, and R. The name of the program is Science Gateways Community Institute. As I broaden my knowledge with these programming languages, I plan to improve my skills with them and hopefully use them in the workforce as the time comes. While I am doing my internship here at Elizabeth City State University, I will also be attending a conference in New Orleans called PEARC17. At the conference, I will also be exposed to more Python training and networking with conference attendees. My goal once I attend the conference is to learn as much as I can and get the best experience while I am there and to get a better understanding of how new programming languages work and how to become as proficient as possible. What I plan on learning while I am there is to learn how to think of ways to work around a problem. Hopefully obtaining those skills will help me apply them as I go on with my career.

As I complete my journey towards earning my bachelor’s degree and becoming the first in my family in earning a four-year degree, my next plan is to continue onwards towards my master’s degree. While I am completing this task, I plan to obtain a job where I will be able to apply my programming skills and work on real world problems. In my career, I hopefully plan to start my own business one day. I want to be successful where I can help provide for my family and myself and help lead others in the right direction of their own paths.
