Dr.
Charles Sun is a graduate of the University of Hawaii. After graduation
he started teaching at his university. In 1990 he began his work with
NOAA, which centered on Coast Watch properties.
He found time to visit
my Coast Watch research team to give us information on how to download
data from the official Coast Watch website. To make our understanding
of the process of downloading, cloud masking, and compositing he had
a Power Point presentation so that we could see what we needed to
do. There is one problem with the images that are downloaded. When
the AVHRR images are downloaded there are spots where you cannot see
what is going on because of clouds. To solve this problem we had to
use cloud masking. To execute this, we had to use UNIX to remove the
clouds to allow us to see the sea level temperature. After this is
done, Dr. Sun advised us that to get a better image we should composite
about a week of pictures. To do this in UNIX we had to go through
a series of commands and downloading. Dr. Sun worked with us closely
and was very patient. I had several problems that rose, but he was
there to help every step of the way.
