Preparing
leaders for the 21st century was what the LS-Lamp conference
was all about. The conference was entitled Integrating Technology
for a Competitive Edge. The title alone spoke for itself. The
conference stressed to its participants that technology would
virtually become our future. In order to gain a competitive
edge in that future, we must pursue graduate studies in technology
and science.
When the undergraduate research scholars of the Office of Naval
Research (ONR) arrived in New Orleans, the first item on the
agenda was to attend the graduate school fair. Many graduate
schools from across the U.S. were represented here. Iowa State
University, Howard University, Purdue University, University
of Michigan, Washington State University, and the University
of Wisconsin-Madison just to name a few, were all in attendance.
Valuable information about summer internships, fellowships,
and graduate school programs were all offered to our advantage.

On
Saturday, we were busy all day. We attended the math and computer
science competition where we had two people competing, Carl
Seward was in the math competition and Eunice was in the computer
science competition. They both did very well and Carl placed
third in his competition. One of the competitors in the math
competition did her presentation on Lie Algebra and I did not
fully understand why x times y had to be subtracted by y times
x. I asked if she could explain tat rule of Lie Algebra more
clearly. She explained that if a permeon was used alone then
this rule would not apply. We also had several people giving
poster presentations and they also did a very good job. There
are two speakers that we had on Saturday that I have to mention:
Dr. Calvin Mackey and Dr. Paula McCauley-Bell. Dr. Mackey spoke
on what he was telling me the day before about money and graduate
school. He also gave us his life story about his personal struggles
and how he made it through both undergraduate and graduate school.
He gave a powerful speech and one of the things that he said
in his speech will stick with me. “The man and woman that
know how will always have a job. The man and woman that know
why will always be their boss.”
