BASKETBALL
Barry Hamler, coach

The Barry Hamler era is in year number 2 on the Elizabeth City State Unviersity campus and with out question Coach Hamler has the Viking Ship heading in the right direction.

In his first season at the helm, Hamler led the Vikings to a fine 15 and 12 overall record. This season ( 1996-97) the Vikings ended the regular season with a 18-5 overall slate, winning the CIAA Northern Division Championship. Even more impressive, The Vikings under Hamler's tutelage won the South Atlantic Region NCAA Division II Champsionship and advanced to the (Elite Eight) NCAA Division II National Champioship.

A native of Stone Gap, VA., Hamler played Collegiately at Clinch Valley College where he earned his B.S. Degree. He and his wife Patty are the proud parents of one son, Matthew

TRACK AND CROSS COUNTRY

Track and cross country were competitive. The Athletic Department will implement ways and means of enhancing these programs.

BASEBALL

The team completed the 1995-96 season with and overall record of 10-17 and a conference record of 8-12, finishing fourth place in the CIAA tournament.

FOOTBALL
Head Football Coach, Elisha Harris

He begins his 1st season at helm of the ECSU Football Program.

Offensively; ECSU will be led by a host of talented running backs. Leading the way will be Aaron Murchinson. Murshinson led the Vikings in rushing. Surpassing the 1,000 yard mark. Along with Murchinson in the backfield will be returning starter Malcom Mackey and Lamont Avent. Returning to anchor the offensive line will be All-CIAA center James Wright.

Defensively, ECSU will be led by All-CIAA linebackers Andrew Richardson, Dameon Latta, along with All-Conference Defensive back Barry Lipscomb. Also, returning to anchor the defensive unit will be Marcus Barber.
