W.E. Waters Middle School
Satellite Imagery Program
W. E. Waters School Page
Two Teachers from W.E. Waters Middle School received a grant in order for selected students to participate in NASA's "You Be The Scientist With Satellite Imagery" program. This program is designed to support extra curricular science activities structured to maximize awareness and utilization of GOES satellite data. This helps students meet core Earth Science learning objectives and to develop marketable skills in the area of computer technology. The "You Be The Scientist" program will launch middle school students into the 21st century with an organized, integrated science and technology educational enrichment program. The program also includes a component, which exposes students to a variety of careers available in research, data analysis, applications, and computer visualization. NASA educational sites, which provide a wealth of resources on science careers and Earth System Science Concepts, will be integrated into the program.

Ms. Dawn Adams and Ms. Sherrye Pollard will be working with ten students who were selected from the three different 6th grade clusters. Students selected for this program were students who showed a desire and interest in learning more about math, science, and computer technology. Ronald Clay, Melissa Poindexter, Ashley Ward, and Paula Hill will represent the Diamonds Cluster. Arielle Maben and Ariel Ramirez will represent the Emeralds Cluster. Shannon Davis, Saneal Bethea, Ronnie Bland, and Andrew Williams will represent the Sapphire Cluster.

Here is what the students have to say about being in the program:

Melissa Poindexter: "I think this program will be nice because it will give us more practice with our school work."

Arielle Maben: "I want to be in this program because I want to learn more about science. I also want to be around people who are interested in science just like me."

Saneal Bethea: "I want to be in this program because I think it is going to be fun and exciting. I really hope I enjoy this program.

Shannon Davis: "I want to be in this program because I like to learn new things and I believe that it will help in other academic clubs such as this."

Ronnie Bland: "I want to be in this club because Science is one of my favorite subjects and I like to learn new things."

Andrew Williams: "I love science and love to mix and make things. I think I'm going to love this club."

Paula Hill: "I think this program will be good because I like science and this is what I want to study in college."

Ashley Ward: " I want to be in this program because I think it would be an extremely productive learning experience. It will be fun because it will be on different things I might need for later in my life."

Ariel Ramzirez: "I want to be in 'You Be The Scientist'. I might learn more things. Well, that and my mom made me to. I think it will be fun because it will be on different things I might need for later in my life."

Ronald Clay: "I think this program is great. I like it because the teachers are friendly. I also think its cool to work with NASA."
