The Earth System Science Academy offers educators the opportunity to learn the health of local waterways and the Dismal Swamp. The Academy challenges educators to develop new skills through the experience of working with university and NASA reseachers.

Langley Educator Resource Center Appointments

Three Educators from within the NRTS region of NC and Virginia received appointments to the staff of the Langley Educator Resource Center in Hampton, Virginia. The award provides Geraldine Middleton, Tonya Scott and Pamela Sweet-Richardson the opportunity to spend 100 hours working with the staff of the ERC. Nick Koltun serves as ERC Manager. Awardees are required to report on their activites during the NRTS Fall training event scheduled for Nov. 5-6, 1999 on the campus of Elizabeth City State University.

NASA's comprehensive education program advances the Nation's education goals through expanding and enhancing the scientific and technological competence of students and educators. Using its inspiring mission, unique facilities, and specialized workforce, NASA conducts and leverages a broad range of science, mathematics, and technology education Programs.

To help disseminate materials and information to educators, NASA's Education DIvision has established the Educator Resource Center Network. This network is comprised of Educator Resource Centers (ERC'S) and the Central Operation of Resources for Educators (CORE). These facilities are the principal distribution points where educators may obtain NASA Publications, video and computer materials, and participate in training workshops on the use of NASA educational products.

Through the NASA Educator Resource Center Network (ERCN), educators can enhance their existing curriculum with information generated by NASA programs, technologies, and discoveries. Although NASA educational materials relate primarily to mathematics, science and technology, they can be valuable curriculum supplements for all subjects. http://www.vasc.org/erc
