The
opening session of CWM 2005 took
place in Moore Hall and consisted
of an information session, greetings,
encouraging lectures, and the mathematics
cheers.
Dr. Linda Hayden, Principal Investigator
for the CWM program, welcomed the
students and their teachers to ECSU
and delivered the expectations for
the days events. Dr. Darnell Johnson,
Chair of the Math and Computer Science
Department at ECSU, welcomed the
students and encouraged them to continue
in their studies of math.
The key speaker for the morning
was Dr. Eleanor G. Jones, past Professor
and Chair of the Mathematics Department
at Norfolk State University (retired).
Dr. Jones spoke on her own trials
of obtaining her degree in a time
when African-Americans were not allowed
to enter graduate work in certain
areas. She challenged the students
to seek out as many math courses
as they could take even if they had
no plans to attend college. She presented
the students with examples of how
math could be fun in the form of
brain teasers that they could use
with their fellow students.
