The
Celebration of Women in Mathematics
(CWM) was held on October 25, 2005
at Elizabeth City State University.
This event is held in conjunction
with Sonia Kavaleskya Day sponsored
by the Association of Women in Mathematics
(AWM). Sonia
Kovalevsky Day consists of a program
of workshops, talks, and math competitions
for middle/high school girls and
their teachers. The purpose of the
program is to encourage young women
to continue their study of mathematics.
Sonia Kovalevskaya
was a great mathematician
and an advocate of women's rights
in the 19th century. It was her struggle
to obtain the best education available
which began to open doors at universities
to women.
