Interdisciplinary Investigations:
The Solid State Chemistry of Magnetic and Electric Materials

Dr. Billy Joe Evans
Professor at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Michigan

Fundamental investigations of candidate materials for applications in magnetic and electronic devices are inherently interdisciplinary, requiring team work among investigators from different disciplines and requiring the individual investigator to be conversant with concepts and methodologies in several fields. Recent findings and progress in the solid state chemistry of magnetic and electronic materials will be discussed with emphasis on the role of mathematical models. For example, the convenience of rigorous mathematical methods in calculating crystalline fields and understanding the colors of certain classes of solids will be presented.
